My father was lamenting an letter he received from the water and electric board asking people in our neighborhood to stop running sprinklers at the same hour 5am-6am because the number of people doing this continues to overtax the system required to pump water up the hill to their homes... apparently this is a letter they get regularly because the vast majority don't bother to switch.
Now this got me to thinking about other limitations on a system that requires water is pumped up the hill... in a power-outage that outlasted the generator (I only assume they have) water would not reach the house... which means in a zombie apocalypse their house is entirely inadequate for a place to stay for very long at all. Which of course I informed them... if that were their plans they'd have to make regular outings for water or to the generator wherever that is... way to dangerous... I received a blank stare.
"I was kidding." After an awkward pause, my mother walks away shaking her head saying over her shoulder, "I should hope so... I really hope so." Clearly me caring about the welfare of my family makes me a disappointment.
I think family should care about what happens to it's members in any given apocalyptic scenario... even a clearly fictional one. It has real world applications. Any kind of invasion or toxic material situation that made holing up in a place without a reliable water source dangerous... see it applies. It just feels super paranoid and silly to say. But zombies... Zombies are just a fun exercise of apocalyptic thinking. Fun. How do they not understand this?
